Gorka Benitez’s latest project, released on Fresh Sound World Jazz.
This time, however, he offers a surprise; playing and singing with Carme Canela, pop and jazz converge in a new style that sounds perfectly natural. And Albert Bover has been added to the line-up of Gorka’s previous CD, “Bilbao” (FSNT 281), creating an exciting new sextet. Gorka has always stood out because of his independence, not allowing anyone to pigeonhole him in any one of the different trends in contemporary jazz. His understanding of music goes beyond the usual stereotypes. That’s what makes him different. He is a musician who has made himself what he is today, imposing his personality on whatever style happens to be popular at any given time. If there is a saxophonist you could define as free (in the fullest meaning of the word), that has to be Gorka.
